Senior Claim Director - Coverage
Location: Hybrid 3x a week out of Princeton, NJ, Short Hills, NJ, Red Bank, NJ, NYC, Atlanta, GA or Chicago IL
A leading global insurer is seeking a Senior Claim Director, Specialty Complex Claims to join its North America Claims team. Reporting to the Head of Specialty Complex Claims, this position is critical in managing high-severity and high-complexity claims across multiple business lines.
Key Responsibilities:
Direct management of complex claims, including those with significant severity, complex coverage disputes, litigation, or arbitration across:
Casualty (Primary & Excess)
Commercial Property
Professional Lines (Management Liability, EPL, Cyber, Design Professionals, Environmental)
Program Claims
Canada Claims (all lines)
Accident & Health (A&H) Claims
Oversee coverage litigation/arbitration, strategy formulation, and external counsel management.
Collaborate with Litigation Management and Vendor Management on legal spend and panel counsel performance.
Drive consistency in discovery, witness preparation, and litigation practices.
Provide strategic guidance on emerging coverage issues and disputes.
Review and approve positions on coverage matters in high-impact jurisdictions (e.g., WA, MO, IL, MT, TX).
Identify coverage and liability trends, shaping portfolio-wide claim strategies.
Partner with internal stakeholders (Legal, Underwriting, Actuarial) and external stakeholders (brokers, reinsurers, counsel).
Coach and mentor claims professionals on legal and strategic claim handling.
Required Qualifications:
7-10+ years of claim handling experience with complex coverage issues and litigation across diverse lines of business.
Legal background (JD required) with experience in insurance litigation or coverage analysis.
Proven ability to manage both direct and TPA-handled claims.
Strong leadership, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
Strategic thinker with an analytical mindset and collaborative working style.
Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
