Senior Product Insurance Counsel. JD required.

Job Title: Senior Counsel - Insurance Product & Regulatory (Admitted Market)
Location: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Chicago, or Atlanta
Department: Legal / Product Development
Reports To: Deputy General Counsel

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Senior Counsel to take a leading role in the legal development and regulatory execution of admitted insurance products across multiple U.S. jurisdictions. This is a high-impact position for a senior attorney with deep knowledge of insurance law, state regulatory regimes, and product architecture-someone who can bridge legal strategy with business enablement.

The successful candidate will operate as a key legal partner to senior stakeholders across underwriting, actuarial, product, and compliance, helping shape market-responsive offerings while ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks. This role is ideal for a self-directed, solution-oriented leader who brings both technical depth and commercial perspective to product innovation in the admitted space.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead legal advisor on all matters related to product design, policy drafting, and regulatory compliance for admitted insurance offerings (e.g., commercial, specialty, and emerging lines).
  • Oversee the end-to-end development of policy forms, endorsements, and declarations, including the refinement and modernization of legacy templates.
  • Strategize and manage SERFF filing initiatives and regulatory engagement across multiple jurisdictions, including direct negotiation with Departments of Insurance.
  • Interpret and communicate complex regulatory developments and filing requirements to executive and functional leadership.
  • Provide senior-level legal insight into competitive product positioning, regulatory strategy, and market entry considerations.
  • Collaborate closely with product development, compliance, and underwriting leadership to ensure alignment of legal, operational, and commercial goals.
  • Supervise and mentor junior attorneys or legal analysts supporting product or filing workstreams.
  • Participate in enterprise-level legal, risk, or regulatory working groups as a subject matter expert in admitted product governance.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to practice in at least one U.S. state (preferably aligned with a key office location).
  • 8+ years of progressive legal experience in the insurance industry, with a strong focus on admitted product development, regulatory filings, and insurance compliance.
  • Deep understanding of state insurance regulations, form approval processes, and emerging regulatory trends.
  • Demonstrated experience leading SERFF filings and managing complex DOI communications independently.
  • Subject matter expertise in at least one or more major P&C lines of business (e.g., commercial property, general liability, cyber, specialty).
  • Outstanding legal drafting, interpretation, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence decision-making and lead cross-functional initiatives.
  • Prior experience mentoring or leading junior legal professionals preferred.

Preferred Attributes:

  • Existing regulatory relationships or prior DOI experience.
  • Exposure to newer risk products or insurance innovation (e.g., climate-related coverages, digital distribution, parametric structures).
  • A reputation for trusted, pragmatic legal guidance and solution-oriented thinking.
  • Enthusiasm for contributing to a high-growth, forward-thinking insurance environment.

What We Offer:

  • A senior seat at the table with influence over core legal, regulatory, and product development strategies.
  • High visibility across the executive team and strategic business initiatives.
  • A collaborative and intellectually engaging culture with opportunity for long-term career growth.
  • Competitive senior-level compensation, including performance-based bonus and comprehensive benefits.
