The ideal candidate will have a history of success defining and prioritizing stories/requirements for new and existing product lines, to deliver products that meet our customers' needs. The candidate will combine strategic thinking, exceptional communication and negotiation skills to manage complex initiatives with the team while managing product development work efforts. Working closely with both customers, vendor partners and internal stakeholders, this role will manage the scope and delivery of a large program of work to implement two Policy Administration Systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a program of work to implement, an Underwriting and Policy Administration System in both US and UK
  • Once implemented, maintain and enhance the US implementation of above PAS
  • Interact with business partners, business analysts, and project stakeholders to understand and capture business value and requirements and ensure that IT efforts are in alignment with business priorities
  • Assist in evaluating 3rd party products where applicable and evaluating how they can be leveraged or implemented to existing platforms and processes
  • Work effectively within the internal development teams when needed using the Agile Scrum process to champion the product backlog, provide detailed acceptance criteria, and ensure the ultimate success of the program
  • Modify, split, clarify, break down, and refine backlog items with assigned Scrum Master and Development Team input.
  • Give final approval for backlog items and acceptance of completed user features.
  • When working with vendor, utilize waterfall methodology to collect, revise, finalize and obtain approval on requirements for all enhancements, functionality changes, integrations with Starr components or third parties. Review and approve technical specifications from vendor, review with internal parties as needed to ensure understanding and agreement. Resolve any issues/ concerns prior to obtaining signoff.
  • Consistently express the "what" and "why" of a function or feature to enhance understanding and implementation.
  • For internal development, champion the product backlog with well written epics, features, and stories that include appropriately detailed acceptance criteria.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to define, develop, shape and refine requirements of business application and platform products, create an execution plan, with a focus on product ROI and value at all times.
  • Translate product initiative requirements to functional team members throughout the product development lifecycle - such as defining user stories, refining sprint backlogs and validating stories are complete
  • Communicate with key stakeholders across the team to make sure that development goals and priorities are clear and aligned with business objectives.
  • Engage with business partners (internal and external) as needed to establish and validate requirements throughout development process
  • Lead/ participate in agile/scrum activities such as sprint planning, daily standups, demos and retrospectives as needed for internal development. Write user stories from scratch and review, refine / elaborate those created by other team members.
  • Assist the Scrum Master with mitigating impediments impacting successful team completion of a release or sprint as needed
  • Prepare and maintain various reports and summaries (e.g., executive summary for the product, status reporting, milestone plans)
  • Plan, schedule and communicate release plans and set expectations for delivery of new capabilities, features, and functionalities.
  • Manage project costs and ensure overall program is within approved budget
  • Actively manage issues, risks and dependencies for assigned project/program in order to meet objectives/deliverables, escalate appropriately
  • Provide vision and direction to the team and stakeholders throughout the product life cycle, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Work closely with the implementation and business success team to develop delivery processes that encourage adoption of new products and features.
  • Assist with development of training materials as needed
    Skills/Experience Required:
  • 5+ years' experience working as IT Product Owner/Project Manager
  • 5+ years' experience with full software development life-cycle.
  • 1+ years of Agile Product Owner experience in a dynamic technology environment.
  • Experience working with third party vendors, contract/SOW review and acceptance
  • Demonstrated business and technology related acumen.
  • Ability to effectively communicate recommendations to executive management
  • Strategic, analytical, and critical thinking expertise; ability to break down complex problems and formulate executable plans
  • Must possess project/time management proficiency
  • Experience in developing project budgets and monitoring project costs
  • Strong cross-functional partnership & leadership skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Experience in working effectively with others not fluent in Agile methodologies when needed
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum work environment
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • Business or data analysis experience in Commercial P&C insurance
