The Chief Tax Officer will be responsible for leading all areas of the tax team for the life insurance business. This will require the management of a team of 4 other individuals reporting to the Chief Financial Officer.

This is a highly visible role that requires both hands on effort and oversight of the greater team within the tax department.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic direction and operations of the Tax Department within the company.
  • Develop, implement, and manage tax strategies, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Provide guidance and support to the executive team on tax-related matters, including advising on financial implications of business decisions.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with external auditors, tax authorities, and other stakeholders to address tax-related queries and concerns.
  • Stay updated with current tax laws and regulations to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of tax returns, ensuring accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
  • Manage and lead a team of tax professionals, providing mentorship, guidance, and performance feedback
  • Preparation of all required income tax returns
  • Financial Statement income tax provisions and disclosures
  • Preparation of federal and state tax compliance
  • Collaborate with various accounting and finance teams internally on all tax related requirements
  • Implementation of new tax systems or requirements as needed

Key Skills:

  • Strong expertise in Life Insurance Tax and US GAAP reporting including ASC 740, STAT, and federal / state compliance
  • Proven experience in leading and managing a tax department in the insurance industry.
  • Excellent knowledge of tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to analyze complex tax issues and provide strategic recommendations.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership abilities to guide and inspire a team towards achieving organizational goals.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with exceptional analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • CPA or MBA/Masters preferred
